Post-Surgical Care in Summer: How to Enjoy the Sun Without Compromising Your Recovery

Summer is a favorite time for many people to enjoy vacations and have more time to recover after plastic surgery. However, high temperatures, sun exposure, and changes in routine make it especially important to follow a series of care instructions to ensure optimal recovery and achieve the best possible results.
At Dr. Patricia Martínez’s practice, we always emphasize that the success of a procedure depends not only on the surgery itself but also on correctly following the recommendations during the post-operative period.

Is it advisable to have surgery in the summer?

There is a common belief that plastic surgery should not be performed during the summer months. However, this is a myth. Most procedures can be performed perfectly well at this time of year, provided the patient follows medical advice.
Many people take advantage of their vacations to have the necessary time to rest and recover peacefully, which can be very beneficial. What is truly important is not the season, but maintaining proper care throughout the entire recovery process.

1. Protect scars from the sun

One of the most important aspects after any surgery is avoiding direct sun exposure on scars. Ultraviolet rays can cause permanent darkening of the scar, changes in pigmentation, an increased risk of inflammation, and a delay in the healing process.

The general recommendation is to completely avoid sun exposure on scars during the first few months and, once sun exposure is possible, to consistently use SPF 50+ sunscreen. In addition, whenever possible, it is advisable to cover the area with light clothing.

2. Stay well hydrated

High temperatures promote fluid loss, which can affect the recovery process. Maintaining proper hydration promotes healing, reduces inflammation, improves circulation, and contributes to overall well-being. Drinking enough water throughout the day is one of the simplest and most effective measures to facilitate recovery.

3. Avoid excessive heat

During the first few weeks, it’s best to avoid situations that significantly raise your body temperature, such as saunas, steam rooms, jacuzzis, prolonged sun exposure, and intense physical activity during the hottest hours of the day. Excessive heat can increase inflammation and promote edema, delaying recovery.

4. Respect the recommended waiting time before swimming

One of the most frequent questions during the summer is when patients can return to the beach or pool. The answer depends on the type of surgery and the progress of each individual case. In general, the treated area should not be submerged until the wounds are completely closed and the surgeon has given the go-ahead for swimming. This helps prevent infections and avoids complications during the healing process.

5. Use compression garments correctly

After procedures such as liposuction, abdominoplasty, or certain facial surgeries, it’s common to wear compression garments or girdles. Although they may be less comfortable in the summer due to the heat, it’s essential to adhere to the wearing schedule recommended by the surgeon. These garments help control inflammation, reduce swelling, and promote tissue adaptation. If the heat is particularly uncomfortable, there are more breathable fabrics that can make the postoperative period more bearable.

6. Take care of your diet

A balanced diet is also part of the recovery process. It is recommended to prioritize foods rich in quality protein, fresh fruits and vegetables, antioxidant vitamins, and essential minerals. At the same time, it is advisable to reduce alcohol consumption and avoid tobacco, as both can hinder healing and increase the risk of complications.

7. Always follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions

Each patient and each procedure is different. Therefore, general recommendations never replace the personalized instructions provided by the plastic surgeon. Regular checkups allow you to verify that the recovery is progressing correctly and address any questions that may arise during the postoperative period.

A careful recovery is part of the success of the surgery

Plastic surgery doesn’t end when you leave the operating room. The postoperative period is a fundamental phase for achieving proper healing and natural, long-lasting results. If you are considering having a procedure this summer or have questions about aftercare, Dr. Patricia Martínez will offer you personalized follow-up to ensure your recovery is as comfortable, safe, and effective as possible.
